Worldwide smallest active q-switched laser

Within the national research project “PULSAR” (Pulsed laser systems with adaptive pulse parameters), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), involved company’s RHe Microsystems GmbH and InnoLight GmbH achieved superior results in the field of microchip laser technology. In this collaboration the worldwide smallest active q-switched laser was realized with a wavelength of 1 µm having a footprint of 25 mm x 50 mm only. An output power of 700 mW was demonstrated with a pulse repetition rate of 40 kHz and a pulse duration of 1 ns. For production, new welding and soldering techniques are used assembling the hermetic housing and laser exit window.  RHe developed automatic integration techniques under protective gas atmosphere for optical and electrical components using flux-free soldering and wire bonding processes. These techniques will transferred in following development steps on as much as possible laser parts with the aim producing time and material effective high quantities in future.

Thus, this very compact micro-chip laser prototype is an extreme reliable and attractive source for different micro-material machining applications. New fields of applications will be evaluated within the PULSAR project using additional fiber amplifiers from Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. to scale the output power and pulse energy to >10 W and 300 µJ.
